Introducing Goji Berries

Used in traditional Chinese Medicine for about two thousand years, the goji
berry (or wolfberry) is now becoming popular in the western world.
Goji berry, or wolfberry, is the common name for the fruit of the Lycium barbarum plant.
They are tiny red berries that can be eaten fresh, juiced, dried, or brewed into tea.

History of the Goji Berry

Goji berries have been used by Chinese natural healers for centuries. According to Wikipedia, goji berries “have long played important roles in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) where they are believed to enhance immune system function, improve eyesight, protect the liver, boost sperm production and improve circulation, among other effects.”

One legend tells of a group of Chinese monks that lived healthily to an unusually old age. At the ripe old age of 80, these monks were said to have lost no teeth and have no white hair. The cause of such amazing youthfulness was said to be the goji berries that dropped into the monastery well.

Another story says that the oldest man who ever lived, Li Ching-Yuen, attributed his longevity to eating goji berries every day. Li Ching-Yuen certainly did eat goji berries, but as part of a complete regime of herbs and foods. Also, historical records are not accurate enough to confirm how old Li Ching-Yuen lived to be. We may never know for sure.
